Dining table, coffee table, side table or bar table?
| Table type | Usage | Role in the home | What should you look out for? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dining table | For eating together, working and lingering over a meal | A central piece of furniture in the room | Choose the size, shape, number of seats and legroom |
| Coffee table | For the seating area, drinks and decorations | Adds a cosy touch to the sofa and armchairs | Bear in mind how it fits in with your seating area and how easy it is to use |
| Side table | As a flexible extra surface next to a chair or sofa | A practical addition with decorative value | Handy if you want to live in a compact space or enjoy rearranging your furniture |
| Bar table | For a casual meal, drinks or a more intimate setting | A functional and light-hearted touch | Please note the height and pair with suitable bar stools |
What size and shape will work in your space?
Choosing the right size starts with the available space and the number of people you want to seat comfortably. So don’t just measure the tabletop – measure the space around it as well. Around a dining table A practical guideline is to allow approximately 70 to 90 cm of clear space, so that chairs can be pushed right back and the passageway remains comfortable to walk through.
A round table or oval table often work well in more compact spaces. These shapes create softer lines and ensure pleasant eye contact around the table. Rectangular models, on the other hand, often make sense in longer spaces or when you want to create more seating. If you’re looking for a narrow table to place against a wall or in the hall, take a look at our wall charts.
Materials and interior styles that create atmosphere
The material plays a major role in determining how a table fits into your home.
- Wood brings warmth and a natural look. It fits in beautifully with a modern interior featuring soft tones, but also with a country-style home that exudes a sense of tranquillity and texture.
- Metal actually adds contrast and can give a table a sleeker or more industrial look. Particularly in the base, it creates a striking accent without making the room feel too heavy.
- Stone or marble creates a striking look and catches the eye more easily. This allows you to add a refined and characterful element to your living space.
- Combinations of materials, such as wood and dark metal, add extra depth and character. The tabletop, finish and base all work together to determine whether a table feels light, robust or, conversely, refined.
Practical considerations: height, seating comfort and combination
- A dining table is usually around 75 to 78 cm high. You should therefore always check that the seat height of your chairs is a good match.
- A bar table is obviously higher and requires bar stools with the correct seat height to ensure comfort.
- The base makes a difference too. It determines how much legroom you have and how easily you can pull up chairs or stools.
- If you want to create a harmonious whole, choose dining chairs or bar stools that match your table in terms of material, colour and shape.
How to keep your table looking its best
- Wood, natural stone and marble each require a different approach. You should therefore always use a care product that is suitable for the material and finish of your table.
- To protect the tabletop from moisture, heat and scratches during daily use, use coasters, placemats and felt where necessary.
- Clean your table gently with a soft cloth and suitable cleaning products. Avoid using unnecessarily harsh cleaning products, particularly on delicate surfaces.
- If you want to know exactly what your table needs, take a look at the care advice on our website and follow the product-specific instructions.
